Kettles Path: 7/17/23

Given the monsoon-like summer we've experienced so far, I wanted to see how my adopted Kettles Path in Waterville Valley was faring. I was not surprised to see that a brook was running down the first 0.1 mile of the trail, just as it does during spring snowmelt. I took a stab at diverting part of the brook before it reaches the trail, but with little success. A better solution would be to relocate this section slightly to the west, getting it out of the streambed.

The first of four blowdowns that I removed. Four other large or sketchy ones remain for the pro crew; none of these is a major impediment to hikers.

Cleared.

Another one.

Done. In this area I spent some time brushing out a prolific growth of beech saplings.

A large tree broke and pieces of it landed on a waterbar. No harm done. No sawing needed, just muscling them off.

Now the drainage can do its thing. The drainages seemed to be working well through all the rain events. Gave them all a summer scraping.

Hot, humid and super hazy at The Scaur, thanks to round #146 of the Canadian wildfire smoke. At least you could see within the valley, including Mt. Tecumseh. There was a nice little breeze.

Sandwich Dome to the south.

Silhouettes of Middle and South Tripyramid. Had a nice chat with Bria Clark, who had hiked here via Livermore Trail, Old Skidder Trail and Irene's Path. This was her first visit to The Scaur, and she liked the view. I hustled  down to the trailhead and made it back in time to open the store for a good part of the afternoon.
