 MORNING ON MOUNT PEMI, 8/8/14

Had a gorgeous summer morning for a hike to a local favorite, 2557-ft. Mount Pemigewasset, home of the Indian Head profile.

The Indian Head Trail is the lesser-used and wilder of the two routes to Mt. Pemi.

 Morning light in the forest.

Most of the trail leads through hardwood forest, until a final steep pitch through birch and conifer.

The view south down the Pemigewasset River valley from the huge summit ledge.

Mts. Liberty and Flume in silhouette.

Southeast view.

Nice expanse of wild country out towards Mount Wolf.

The long sloping profile of Wolf.

I had the summit to myself for an hour - a benefit of an early start.

Clouds boiling around Mount Moosilauke, seen through New Hampshire's own "Wolf Jaw," the pass between Mount Wolf and the "Wolf Cub."

The wild, trailless southern spurs of South Kinsman.

Out on the edge, you're at the top of the Indian Head.

View around the corner from an off-trail ledge, showing small valley leading north towards Mud Pond, which is on the other side of the height-of-land.

  1. Nice report ! We hiked the Mt. Pemi Trail last week and it was a great little hike, as we were staying at the Pemi Cabins, and are not in good enough shape for 4K's right now. So glad we hiked it, great views. -Wendy from CT
