Took a long morning walk from Lincoln Woods out to Franconia Brook Trail on a humid smoke-haze day. The main purpose was to check out reported beaver flooding in the section south of Hellgate Brook.
Along the way I took in a hazy view of Owl's Head from the edge of a beaver swamp.
This part of Franconia Brook valley has long been a haven for beavers.
The flooding on the trail begins about 1/3 mile south of Hellgate Brook.
It extends for 0.1 mile, so anyone heading to Thirteen Falls can expect wet feet.
Approaching the source of the flooding.
Looking back near the north end of the flooding.
The water is coming from this wetland. A western spur of Bondcliff rises beyond.
Heading south, back to drier ground.
Small purple fringed orchid.
Shrubby wetland beside the trail.
Before heading home, I took a seat for a while beside this scenic beaver pond north of the Lincoln Brook Trail junction. Here I admired the view of the Bondcliff spur and a ridge of West Bond in back, and studied a Belted Kingfisher through my binoculars. A peaceful spot in the Pemigewasset Wilderness.
