HEDGEHOG MOUNTAIN: 4/30/13
My stalwart trail maintenance helper Dave Stinson drove up from Newmarket, and I joined him for a day of trail work on my adopted western section of the UNH Trail on Hedgehog Mountain. The day was perfect for it - sunny, dry, comfortable and mostly bug-free.All drainages were cleaned, and all blowdown removed except for a couple of stepovers and a massive downed hemlock near the bottom of the trail that will best be handled by the USFS Saco pro crew.
Here Dave takes in the view across the Albany Intervale from the "lower perch" at Allen's Ledge, a great destination for a hike of only 2+ miles round trip.
A blowdown just above Allen's Ledge before...
...and after.
West Sleeper and Tripyramid from an outlook just off the trail below the summit.
From the summit, evening light on the broad Oliverian Brook valley.
The mighty Passaconaway casts a shadow over his eastern retainers, Nanamocomuck Peak, Wonalancet Hedgehog and Square Ledge..
Mt. Chocorua over the north ridge of Mt. Paugus.
Mt. Washington and Mt. Tremont, from the trail just north of the summit.
Mt. Carrigain, Green's Cliff and Church Pond. Thanks for your help, Dave - it felt good to get the spring work completed early in the season.

FYI, the Downes Brook Parking lot is closed right now. There is a mini sink hole in the lot.
ReplyDeleteThanks - should have mentioned that. We parked on the shoulder of the Kanc and walked in on the short road to the trailhead.
