Took a quiet morning walk on the Downes Brook Trail and went off-trail partway up the Downes Brook (Passaconaway) Slide.
Sylvan beauty at the base of the slide.
Cascade and pool.
Tis the season for goldenrod.
Sliding stream.
Early sign of autumn.
Lower slabs, still bare on a slide that fell in the early 1890s.
Ledge-step cascade.
Ferns find a toehold in a crevice.
I wish I knew the full story behind this iron ring embedded in the top of a ledge slab partway up the slide. It may have been used by the loggers of the Conway Lumber Company's Swift River Railroad (1906-1916) to snub logs down the ledge slab and over a 25-foot drop below.
Water streaks.
Sedges in the sun.
Lance-leaved goldenrod was found on 13 of 22 White Mountain slides sampled by researcher Edward Flaccus in the late 1950s.
