Yet another warm and sunny day for my second fall maintenance trip to Passaconaway Cutoff, the adopted trail of the AMC Four Thousand Footer Committee.
On this trip I cleared the 24 drainages on the upper half-mile of the trail. With the leaves down, the theme along this section is "In the Presence of Passaconaway."
One of several monster drainages.
A more standard rock waterbar.
A new signpost at the junction with the Square Ledge Trail, at the upper end of the Cutoff.
If time permits, my treat after completing trail work is a short hike up the Square Ledge Trail to the 1938 slide on Nanamocomuck Peak. This is a wild and remote section of footpath.
Remnants of a cookstove from a high mountain logging camp of the Conway Lumber Company's Swift River Railroad (1906-1916).
The Square Ledge Trail passes along the base of the Nanamocomuck Slide.
A short scramble up the lower part of the slide rewards with a fine view to the north.
Hedgehog Mountain, Owl Cliff/Mt. Tremont and Mt. Washington.
The sunlit cone of Mt. Passaconaway.
On the way back along the Square Ledge Trail I used my Silky for a quick cut of this snapped-off birch.
Cleared, time to head back down the Cutoff, with some conifer and hobblebush brushing along the way.
