Scenes from Olde Cape Cod: 12/25-12/27/23

A few photos taken on walks while we were down on Lower Cape Cod enjoying a family visit.

Bridge Pond in Wiley Park, Eastham, at dusk on Christmas Day.

Moon over Great Pond, Wiley Park, Eastham.

One of our favorite walks on the Cape, a fire road through the South Truro woods leading to a view of the Atlantic from the top of a lofty sand cliff.

We could get used to these soft sandy trails.

When we reached the sand cliff and peered out through the fog to the ocean, a surprise awaited.

A Brocken Spectre!

I've only seen this sun-and-fog phenomenon once before, on Fulling Mill Mountain in the Mahoosucs. It was named after a mountain in Germany, the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains. It was first observed there in 1780.

Carol playing with the shadow.

Heading back into the fog.

We always enjoy walking in Nickerson State Park, a beautiful enclave of clear kettle ponds and woods of pitch pine and oak with an extensive trail system.

Our two-mile loop around Little Cliff Pond touched four kettle ponds. This view looks south along the length of Little Cliff Pond.

Pleasant woodsy trails meander through the park.

Beautiful sand beach on Higgins Pond.

Eel Pond, smaller and more secluded.

Rounding the south end of Little Cliff Pond.

Cool gnarled pitch pine, struggling for survival.

A favorite trail section along the isthmus between Little Cliff Pond and (Big) Cliff Pond.

Catching a panorama of Cliff Pond, at 206 acres the largest in the park. In the summer there are hundreds of campsites occupied here and it is a busy place. In the off-season Nickerson is one of the true gems of the Cape.
