BLACK POND: 7/30/09
A quick evening jaunt at Lincoln Woods to a favorite place of tranquility.
West Bond seen up the East Branch, from a point past the Osseo Trail junction and Camp 8.
An abutment fringing the Ice Pond, which was built in 1907 to supply ice for the East Branch & Lincoln logging camps.
Today the Ice Pond is a meadow, across which can be seen Mt. Flume (right) and spurs of Whaleback Mtn.
Just north of the Ice Pond is an old logging camp site along the Black Pond Trail.
The Black Pond Trail is a very pleasant ramble as it winds through hardwoods along a bank above Birch Island Brook.
I dropped down to see a small cascade on the brook.
From the outlet of Black Pond there's a classic view of the spire-like S peak of Owl's Head.
From here you can also spot the cliffs on the SE spur of Owl's Head.
Last winter I bushwhacked to those cliffs with friends John and Chris. From one spot we could see down the East Branch valley to Osceola, with Black Pond visible at the bottom left of the view.
On the E side the cliffs afforded memorable views over the Pemi Wilderness.
The Black Pond Trail ends at a shoreside sitting rock with a pretty view over the pond to Bondcliff and its sharp S peak.
Zooming in on Bondcliff.
After a peaceful 20-minute stay on the rock, it was time to head home before it got too dark. On the way out I found this view of Osceola, from the point where Birch Island Brook empties into the East Branch.
