Keep an eye out on NewEnglandOutside.com as I'm sure it'll be posted sometime this week. We miss the right fork and had to deal with a long bushwack out to the trail. The snow drifts were pretty deep in places, but I'm still surprised this isn't on the ice climber/mountaineering radar more than it is. There is a 30-40 foot ice wall and lots of ice bulges.

Thanks again for all the great information!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02185543368358602347noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814464431995035927.post-22150607152388545212014-01-14T11:31:41.768-05:002014-01-14T11:31:41.768-05:00Hi Jeremy,

That is correct, this slide is sometimes skied, and the old route of the Greeley Ponds Trail runs parallel to it. I'll look forward to reading your report about it. I imagine it's very icy again this winter.

The "K1" and K2" Cliffs were named by Waterville folks in the early 1900s, "K" standing for Kancamagus, I assume. A friend of mine bushwhacked to the top of K2 a couple of winters ago. Some pretty serious terrain in there!

Steve Steve Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16403760631302934834noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814464431995035927.post-12233058664533399822014-01-13T22:43:32.763-05:002014-01-13T22:43:32.763-05:00Hi Steve,

From what I've gathered from you and others is this slide is sometimes skied under the correct conditions. It's called East Osceola slide. The old trail was once parallel to this slide that lead to the summit of east Osceola, but has since, and somewhat recently, been rerouted to start above Greeley Ponds.

Is that all correct as far as you know? Why was the old trail closed?

We're planning an ascent of the slide in early February. One of my climbing mates runs NewEnglandOutside.com, and there will surely be a report there when we return. I'd be happy to report back as well as you do a fantastic job accounting for the history and information with the right amount of detail. Thanks for that.

Also, around the time of this trip last year we also ventured back into this area and climbed up to the base of K2 cliff. At the time we had no idea what it was called. Finally got around to seeing some of the slides, almost in my backyard. There are still a few more spots to check out. You've been having some pretty good adventures yourself! With all the ledges, cliffs and slides in that area, looks like one could a week or more exploring them all. I'm counting the years, months, and days 'til I'm able to spend more time on adventures such as this.

Great report, informative as always.
JoeJustJoehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07657236449099527872noreply@blogger.com
