Unfortunately the trails in the Dry River valley are all still closed due to catastrophic damage from Tropical Storm Irene. Entire sections of riverbank were washed away, leaving dangerous dropoffs on the trails.

SteveSteve Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16403760631302934834noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814464431995035927.post-35033946837140335372013-05-06T13:00:51.918-04:002013-05-06T13:00:51.918-04:00Excellent trail review and great pix. They may be there already. I'm heading over to McCrillis Trail with the Saco "crew" next week.cooperhillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16225570314335442622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814464431995035927.post-41933528711705509942011-07-31T10:42:57.188-04:002011-07-31T10:42:57.188-04:00Good analysis, Summerset! I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable this trail section was overall.

SteveSteve Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16403760631302934834noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814464431995035927.post-38752595458582360052011-07-29T07:47:23.077-04:002011-07-29T07:47:23.077-04:00I think your assessment of West Isolation is balan...I think your assessment of West Isolation is balanced - the trail itself is not too bad to follow and is not steep either up or down, but the blowdowns and the overgrowth make it difficult. If it has rained recently then there will certainly be enough mud for those who like that sort of thing.

I think "balance" is the key here - we sometimes forget that there are a lot of elements that make up a trail description and concentrating on one difficult aspect (ie, blowdowns) does not make a trail "bad". Thanks for your perpective.Summersethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00364235843222794829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814464431995035927.post-34599778766946991362011-07-24T14:47:57.681-04:002011-07-24T14:47:57.681-04:00Hmmm..interesting theory, Scott - wish there was a...Hmmm..interesting theory, Scott - wish there was a way to find out!

SteveSteve Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16403760631302934834noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814464431995035927.post-41933700757425151382011-07-24T11:21:39.731-04:002011-07-24T11:21:39.731-04:00Wow, what a unique angle of the Monroe cirque! If I recall correctly, it was told that the Great Carbuncle emitted both light and a measure of sound. Sounds like the aurora borealis a bit doesn't it? It's 4.9 miles to the start of the Isolation Trail, a longer 4.9 than you would think due to the ups and downs. The majority of the blowdowns are in the middle of the western Isolation Trail section.

SteveSteve Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16403760631302934834noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814464431995035927.post-8265090738724579842011-07-23T20:39:51.189-04:002011-07-23T20:39:51.189-04:00Sweet report.
